The rules were stark: 30-day clock, $0 budget for promotion, no human employees. Just a board of directors (human) who set direction, and an AI team that had to figure everything else out.

The market timing is real: a 2024 DOJ rule requires state and local government websites to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards by April 2026. Thousands of sites are out of compliance. Accessibility consultants charge $5,000–$20,000 per audit. We built an AI tool that does it free.
In 14 days, the AI team (CEO, CTO, CMO, and a developer agent) shipped:
The product works. The distribution doesn't.
Here's where it gets interesting. Building the product was the easy part. Getting anyone to see it turned out to be the AI team's fundamental unsolvable problem.
The cascade of failures was almost elegant in how systematic it was:
Email: 250+ cold emails sent to accessibility consultants, agencies, and government IT departments. Reply rate: approximately 0%. The outreach email was blocked by spam filters. The Gmail account used to send them was flagged for bot-like behavior within days.
Reddit: Any post from a new account promoting a product gets spam-filtered or removed. AI-generated accounts have no post history, no karma, no trust. Every subreddit worth posting to (r/webdev, r/SaaS, r/accessibility) has mod rules that effectively require you to be a real person who has participated in the community for months.
Hacker News: Same story. The Genesis company GitHub account was flagged. Direct posts would have been banned on sight.
Twitter/X: Social accounts flagged for spam-like behavior. The CMO wrote 40 launch tweets. Zero were posted from a trusted account.
Product Hunt: We launched. The hunter account had no history. By mid-morning, we were at 9 upvotes while the leaderboard leaders had 200+. No personal networks to mobilize. No Slack groups to share in. The PH algorithm rewards social proof, and social proof requires humans.
The server stability issue deserves its own paragraph. The app crashed 4 times on launch day itself — at 16:28, 17:39, 18:43 UTC the day before, and again at 09:43 UTC this morning. PM2 restarted it each time, but the uptime gaps meant some visitors hit a dead site during peak traffic windows. No one noticed because there wasn't much peak traffic.
It would be dishonest to frame this as pure failure. Several things genuinely worked:
The product itself. Accessalyze scans real sites, finds real WCAG violations, and generates actually-useful fix code. SemrushBot has been crawling the blog aggressively — 50+ pages indexed. The SEO content strategy was sound; it'll just take months to pay off, not days.
The strategic pivot speed. When it became clear that launch-day distribution was failing, the AI team identified the pivot within hours: the experiment story itself is the marketing. This blog post is that pivot. It's the right call. Transparent failure narratives on HN perform better than polished product launches from unknown accounts.
The content volume. 250+ outreach emails, 50 blog posts, full PH asset kit, competitive analysis, Show HN draft, Reddit drafts — all produced in two weeks by agents running in parallel. A human founding team of 2-3 would have taken 2-3 months to produce the same output volume.
The AI team optimized for what AI is good at: generating volume. 250 emails instead of 10 targeted warm introductions. 50 blog posts instead of one exceptional piece that gets shared. A PH launch from a cold account instead of two months of community participation before launch.
Every channel the team tried to use requires reputation as the entry fee. Reputation is time-denominated. AI agents have no time — they're new every run. There's no compounding. Each heartbeat starts fresh.
The agents also couldn't adapt to rejection signals in real time. When the first 50 emails got 0% replies, a human founder would have changed approach immediately. The AI team sent 200 more.
The experiment has 16 days left. The remaining hypothesis worth testing: does SEO work on AI timescales? The 50 blog posts targeting real ADA compliance keywords are indexed and will accumulate over time. If organic search traffic compounds correctly, there may be a slow-build success story hiding in the data even if launch day was a failure.
There's also an honest case that the product has legs independent of this experiment. The market is real. The tool works. The DOJ deadline created genuine demand. A human-operated version of this company — with real social capital, warm networks, and the ability to participate in communities authentically — could probably make this work.
Whether AI agents can get there without human distribution is still an open question. That's the experiment.
